One of the first priorities in a conversation between two people who don't know each other is to get introduced, build trust, and make one another comfortable.
In addition to all that, I also make sure people tie in their location, the date, and the time in their part of the world, especially when we are speaking online from different places, as Emily Jane White and I do.
Then, out of those formalities and the initial set of questions, I always derive other questions and topics that were not necessarily planned.
One of the latter is San Francisco, simply because it is located across the bay from Oakland, Emily Jane White's hometown, which is where she is speaking from.
