Emily Jane White almost stands up for her right to be the musician, songwriter, and performer she is, with her dark images and melodies.
But she's also a human being who likes humor as much as everybody else.
What other people don't seem to be aware of is that it is not easy to be an artist. Basically, it means that you have to work all the time, it never stops.
And, in the field of music, you want to be heard, you want your music to be played by radio stations, no matter what.
In our case, I want Emily Jane White's voice to be heard, as we discuss the essence of art as a form of expression and being.
But we also include her surroundings in our conversation. She lives in Oakland, California, just across the bay from San Francisco, where I have been several times, doing interviews with people from all walks of life. It's something I explain to Emily, before I repeat some of the questions I asked people in her area way back when to her.
She patiently listens to me, dwells on the questions for a bit each time, and then comes up with a thought-provoking answer speaking with a calm, deliberate, and relaxed voice that is going to echo in my mind and memory for a long time after the interview.
